Gift of Life is based in Canberra and is a non-governmental advocacy group promoting organ and tissue donation. We play an influential role both in the ACT and surrounding region and at the national level. Our Board meets regularly to determine action. We lobby both the Australian and ACT governments and sometimes also interstate on policy-related issues at the political level. We work closely with the Australian Government's Organ and Tissue Authority and have recently been closely involved in the preparation of a national community speakers' resource kit for use by volunteer speakers. We participate in DonateLife ACT policy advisory groups.

We also play a prominent role on education and awareness-raising – with our prime activities being the annual walk around the lake and the ACT Chief Minister's awards to citizens in the ACT and surrounding region who have made a major contribution to organ and tissue donation awareness. We speak to schools, clubs and other organisations. From time to time, we become involved with sporting events such as fun runs, golf days and football matches. We maintain a website detailing our activities and our constitution www.giftoflife.asn.au

The Board of Gift of Life becomes engaged in these various activities and sometimes seeks the cooperation of our members by calling upon them to become involved. Such involvement is, of course, voluntary.

We also invite members to attend our Annual General Meeting, usually in November, when election to the Board, the annual financial statement and any other business is discussed.

Terry Connolly

Justice Terry Connolly died suddenly in the early morning of 25 September 2007 on Red Hill, having cycled to the top as part of his exercise routine.  He was a Supreme Court Judge since 2003, and Master since 1996.  Terry was the Member for Molonglo in 1990-1995 and served as the ACT Attorney-General and Minister in various portfolios, including Health.  He and his family have lived in Canberra for many years and he was a popular Canberran.

More importantly, Terry was a husband, father, son and, following his death, a tissue donor.

Terry’s wife, Dr Helen Watchirs, says that she and Terry had discussed their wishes in relation to organ donation.  This meant that at the dreadful time of death, she was clear on his wishes.  Terry’s donation to the improvement of other lives has given Helen and his daughters a sense of contribution, and has helped make up for a life cut short.
